Honi the Circle Maker: A Talmudic Tale for Tu b’shvat

Recommended for all ages

Tu B’shvat is the Jewish birthday of the trees…so here’s a little tale we created to honor our big friends. Straight from the Talmud (the living encyclopedia of Jewish law), G‑dcast brings you two stories about Honi the Circle Maker! Now get out there and hug a tree.

Gratitude for Tu B’Shvat Offerings

Tu Bishvat (טו בשבט‎ “15th of Shvat”) is also called “Rosh HaShanah La’Ilanot” (ראש השנה לאילנות‎ “New Year of the Trees.”) The day is often celebrated as an ecological awareness day, as an arbor day and trees are planted in celebration. Jewish interpretation is often very specific. There are a myriad of Jewish subcultures and people, and the interpretations in this series explores the array of thoughts that our diverse set of storytellers and contributors have on Torah. To see more of the videos in our Jewish Holiday series, please take a look at our collection here on our site.

Thanks to the ROI Community for helping produce this animated holiday video for Tu B’shvat. Additional thanks to each of the writers, narrators, producers, educators, and sound engineers that contributed including Jonathan Bayer, Zelig Golden, Renna Khuner-Haber, Sarah Lefton, Matthue Roth, Bill Selig, Richard Silverman, Jeanne Stern, Julie Wolk and Evan Wolkenstein.
