About the Storyteller
Hesta Prynn
New York City

If the name Hesta Prynn sounds familiar to you there’s good reason for it. “Hesta Prynn & Civil Shepherd” is the new project launched by Hesta Prynn from the Hip-Hop trio Northern State. Hesta Prynn In Civil Shepherd came together on a tour bus climbing toward the Eiffel Tower. While on the road with Tegan and Sara, a new style of writing emerged for her. The songs started to stray from Hip Hop and head towards more keyboard driven/electronic sounds. With Sara Quin overseeing the new project and Chuck Brody (Lykke Li, Santogold, Wu-Tang Clan) and Jon Siebels (Kenan Bell, Eve 6) handling production, the result has been a whole new sound for Hesta Prynn – indie-rock infused electro-pop from an evolving songwriter finding a new voice. Contributing to this new project are NYC newcomers Bear Hands, drummer Eric Gardner of Gnarls Barkley and Brooklyn legend Tim Harrington of Les Savy Fav. The album is being recorded in New York and LA. It is about life in the city and the loves therein. Northern State have released 3 albums to date, collaborated with everyone from The Beastie Boys’ Adrock to Le Tigre’s JD Sampson, enjoyed TV placements in primetime shows (Grey’s Anatomy, Entourage, Kath & Kim) and toured the world over with bands like The Roots, The Gossip, Gym Class Heroes - with their most recent release ‘Can I Keep This Pen’ joining Tegan and Sara for both US/Canadian and European tours.
