Eli Winkelman started Challah for Hunger in 2004 while she was a student at the Claremont Colleges. CfH volunteers bake challah and sell it to raise money for the victims of the genocide in Darfur. She is its National Coordinator. For some, CfH remains their only Jewish activity, but more use CfH as a stepping stone into the Jewish community. For non-Jews, the strong presence of challah on campus has been educational, and for Jewish customers and students, inspirational. Eli has also worked on Israel advocacy and served as president of the Hillel student board. She is currently a PresenTense fellow and a writer for The Jew and the Carrot blog. Photographic evidence exists across the Internet of a hug she shared with President Barack Obama.
